Glucosamine is an amino sugar synthesized from glucose and glutamine. It is used in the biosynthesis of proteoglycans and glycosaminoglycans, which are the building blocks of cartilage. The lack of proteoglycans can lead to degeneration of articular cartilage.
In the elderly, glucosamine is recommended for use with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis; in the younger ones, it is mainly intended to prevent cartilage wear due to sports or other stressful activities for the joints.
