Carnitine is an amino acid derivative contained in almost all cells in our body. The highest concentrations are found in skeletal and smooth muscle, where long-chain fatty acids are used primarily for energy production. One of the main functions of L-carnitine in the body is to transport long-chain fatty acids into the cell's mitochondria, where these fatty acids are 'burned' to create the energy that powers our bodies.
The body can only synthesise L-carnitine from the amino acids lysine and methionine (two of the 20 amino acids that together build proteins in our bodies), while vitamin C, iron, vitamin B6 and niacin are also involved in its synthesis.
Dietary supplementation with acetyl L-carnitine is particularly recommended after the age of 40, as this is when the body's natural production of L-carnitine starts to decline.
Each capsule contains 500 mg of acetyl L-carnitine.
